How to operate a forklift
- You MUST be a qualified and licensed forklift operator.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipments, for example, a hard hat, safety shoes and hi-visibility jackets.
- Examine the parts of a forklift before use. Check for faulty and functional parts. Don’t operate a forklift if it needs to be repaired.
- Before starting up the forklift ensure that all equipment’s controls are in reach and the seat position and mirrors are adjusted to the operator’s needs.
- Observe all signs. Be aware of the height of the load. Follow the work site rules and guidelines.
- Do not over speed past the speed limit. Take corners and any turns slowly to minimise risk of tipping.
- Avoid Hazards such as bumps.
- Ensure your load is stable and secure.
- Do not overload the forklift and ensure that the load is evenly distributed.
- Switch off the forklift when refuelling it.
