Tower Crane Operator Course in South Africa (Top Slewing C41 & Bottom Slewing C42)
Wheelset Academy's Occupational Certificate: Tower Crane Operator programme trains learners to inspect work areas, perform pre-start and set-up checks, plan and prepare a lift, operate the crane by lifting, moving and positioning loads, communicate with riggers, and secure the crane correctly — for roles in construction, infrastructure development, logistics and industrial lifting.
The course is offered as two class variants — Top Slewing (C41) and Bottom Slewing (C42) — each registered at NQF Level 3 with 40 credits, sharing the same SAQA Qualification ID (SP-211037), QCTO accreditation number, knowledge and practical module structure, entry requirements, duration and fees. Delivered in English through classroom, blended online or on-site training from Wheelset Academy's Pretoria and Kempton Park branches.

C41 Top Slewing vs C42 Bottom Slewing
Both classes are registered with identical NQF level, credits, SAQA Qual ID, QCTO accreditation number, duration and fees on their live source pages — the difference between them is the crane's slewing (rotation) mechanism, not the qualification terms.
- Top slewing (C41): the crane rotates near the top of the tower, close to the jib and counter-jib — typically used where the tower itself stays fixed and only the upper assembly turns.
- Bottom slewing (C42): the whole tower structure rotates from a slewing ring near its base — typically used on shorter, mobile-base or self-erecting tower crane setups.
This mechanical distinction is general crane-industry terminology, not stated on either Wheelset source page — confirm which class matches the specific tower crane you'll be trained and assessed on with admissions before enrolling.
