Each work experience module is completed in a workplace, under supervision and independently, at least three times within a period of five weeks.
Practise payroll management before you run a live payroll
The practical modules are practised within a simulated or working payroll environment. Each one is built around the decisions a payroll manager makes, from setting the cost of employment to signing off year-end compliance.
Employment cost and remuneration
Read and interpret employment contracts, calculate basic salary, allowances, benefits and deductions, and test the cost to company against policy and legislation.
Year end and statutory compliance
Reconcile monthly payments, coordinate COIDA and SARS submissions, including EMP201, IRP5 and EMP501, and process adjusted payments.
Planning, controls and audit
Plan and assign payroll work, set measurable objectives, establish internal controls that separate duties, and prepare the payroll function for internal, external and SARS audits.
Payroll management tasks, from employee cost to audit-ready records
- Read and interpret employment contracts and confirm they comply with the company structure
- Calculate basic salary, allowances, benefits, deductions and variable allowances to legislative requirements
- Test the cost to company against company policy and against legislation
- Reconcile the cost to net pay and calculate total personnel costs per business unit
- Generate and submit the payroll interface to the financial system and coordinate the payroll journal entries
- Confirm monthly COIDA calculations and complete COIDA reconciliations for all in-year provisions
- Process monthly EMP201 payments and reconcile the balance due to SARS
- Complete bi-annual reconciliations, IRP5 reconciliations and the EMP501 annual submission
- Plan payroll performance objectives and a performance schedule aligned to compliance dates
- Establish internal controls, assign them to business units and test them against policy
- Conduct period audits, prepare units for internal, external and SARS audits, and compile action plans
- Analyse payroll expenses such as overtime and travel costs, and recommend ways to manage total cost to company
