You assess three real candidates before you finish
The work experience module requires you to plan for and carry out assessments of three candidates under the guidance of a subject matter expert, then submit a portfolio of evidence that includes the expert's evaluation report and your completed assessment documentation. The portfolio is required for access to the final integrated external assessment.
Assess across all domains
Practical, foundational and reflexive competence are each assessed with suitable tools, such as observation sheets, knowledge assessment sheets and a portfolio of evidence.
Judge evidence fairly
Apply the rules of evidence (valid, authentic, reliable, current and sufficient) and explain a competent or not-yet-competent decision in terms of impact and mitigation.
Give feedback that helps
Record strengths and weaknesses, agree a SMART plan and decide whether the candidate meets all, some or none of the criteria or needs to supplement evidence.
Planning, evidence, judgement and feedback in practice
- Confirm assessment parameters and learner readiness before the assessment
- Identify barriers to fair assessment and plan how to address them
- Check the venue, resources, logistics and documentation
- Engage with the candidate in a constructive, unbiased way
- Collect and record evidence using the right tool for each learning domain
- Judge evidence against the rules of evidence and competency requirements
- Make a motivated decision and give guidance on remediation where needed
- Draft a feedback report and agree next steps in a SMART plan
- Record the candidate's feedback on the assessment
- Review the process, instruments and evidence against assessment principles
- Manage standard assessment documentation and records
- Build a portfolio of evidence with an evaluation report from your subject matter expert
Assessment practitioner course duration, entry requirements, cost and certificate
The questions people ask most before enrolling in assessor training, answered from the curriculum and checked against what other providers publish.
Course duration
The curriculum sets 20 credits, which at the standard 10 notional hours per credit is about 200 hours of learning, including the workplace assessments. Providers advertise a few contact days plus several weeks to complete a portfolio of evidence, or 10 weeks to 4 months in total. Wheelset Academy will confirm its schedule with admissions.
Entry requirements
The curriculum requires an NQF Level 4 qualification with Communication. Some providers also ask for a certified copy of your ID and your CV, so ask admissions which documents we need. You also need access to a workplace and a subject matter expert for the three candidate assessments.
Course cost
Our current fee is on the fees page. Other providers publish R4,500 to R7,000 for the full skills programme, and many quote only on request, so compare what each price includes: workplace assessment support, moderation of your portfolio and the final assessment.
Certificate
When you meet the internal criteria the provider issues a statement of results, and you can then take the final integrated summative assessment. On success the QCTO issues a skills programme certificate. Some providers add their own letter of competence.
How to become an assessment practitioner in South Africa
There is no single route, but these are the steps most providers describe. Check the requirements of the quality body that covers the subject you want to assess.
1. Know your subject
Competence in the subject you will assess is the main requirement, and a qualification at or above the level you will assess is usually expected.
2. Complete assessor training
Take an accredited programme such as this one, with an NQF Level 4 qualification with Communication as your entry point.
3. Assess three candidates
Plan, run and record assessments of three candidates under a subject matter expert, then build your portfolio of evidence.
4. Be found competent
Your portfolio and workplace evidence are assessed and moderated, and you complete the final integrated summative assessment.
5. Register where required
Some providers say you then register with the relevant SETA or quality body for your subject area. Confirm which body applies to you.
6. Keep developing
Move on to facilitation or the Training and Development Practitioner qualification if you want a wider learning and development career.

Training methodology: how the course is delivered, assessed and certified
The programme combines learning, simulated practice and real assessments in a workplace.
Delivery
Blended learning covers the knowledge module, then simulated practice with assessment documentation, then workplace assessments. The simulated practice uses assessment documents and a candidate, so you rehearse before you assess for real.
Assessment
You are assessed against internal criteria for each module. The work experience module needs an evaluation report from your subject matter expert, completed assessment documentation and a portfolio of evidence.
Certificate
The provider confirms your results in a statement of results. After the final integrated summative assessment the QCTO issues the skills programme certificate. Learners with prior learning can ask about RPL.
Why train your own assessors
Qualified assessors in your own organisation keep learner assessments fair, consistent and well documented, and they reduce your reliance on external assessors. The programme gives each assessor defined, assessed outcomes and a statement of results, which supports your skills development records. Group intakes can be arranged by contacting admissions.
