Excavator Operator Course Content

This Excavator Operator course is made up of Knowledge Modules, Practical Skill Modules, and Work Experience Modules. Together, these components build theoretical understanding, applied machine operating skills, and workplace readiness. The curriculum includes 23 credits of knowledge modules, 19 credits of practical skills modules, and 33 credits of workplace experience modules.

Knowledge Modules

There are Four (4) Knowledge Modules in the Occupational Certificate: Excavator Operator qualification. These modules build the theoretical foundation needed to understand workplace operations, excavator systems, health and safety requirements, mining and construction environments, and machine controls.

Workplace fundamentals
  • This module develops understanding of employment systems, workplace organisation, ethics at work, productivity, teamwork, labour relations, quality systems, and current workplace trends within mining and construction environments.

  • Learners study workplace safety procedures, PPE, emergency response, hazard identification, evacuation procedures, environmental hazards, gases, confined spaces, electrical systems, fatigue management, and risk mitigation methods.

  • This module introduces mining and construction operational methods, dump truck operational processes, haul road procedures, machine limitations, operational cycles, and machine applications within production environments.

  • Learners study dump truck electrical systems, hydraulic systems, machine controls, diesel engines, safety devices, gauges, monitoring systems, lubricants, tyres, and machine consumables used during operations.

Practical Skills Modules

There are Three (3) Practical Skill Modules in the Excavator Operator course. These modules develop practical workplace competence in machine operation, inspections, emergency response, and operational activities.

Work safely and respond to emergencies
  • This module trains learners to use firefighting equipment, respond to emergencies, perform evacuations, follow emergency procedures, and apply workplace safety protocols within mining and construction environments.

  • Learners identify machine components and controls, observe machine operations, conduct workplace inspections, complete pre-operational checklists, identify defects, and report operational deviations safely.

  • This module develops practical operating skills including machine startup, movement, positioning, load and haul operations, monitoring machine performance, emergency shutdown procedures, and operational reporting.

Workplace Experience Modules

There is One (1) Work Experience Module in the Occupational Certificate: Excavator Operator course. This module gives learners workplace exposure and supervised operational experience within real mining or construction operational environments.

Workplace operations
  • Learners gain practical workplace experience by operating dump trucks under supervision, participating in emergency drills, conducting inspections, identifying hazards, completing reports, monitoring performance, and independently operating dump trucks to mine standards.
